Nutrition Management

Nutrition Management can be accessed through the MIMI-RX platform to address the nutritional needs of community members. Maintaining a healthy diet incorporating fruits and vegetables is essential to maintain a strong immune defense against infectious diseases, and prevent chronic diseases such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and COPD.

An example of a popular nutrition management program currently available in MIMI-Rx is Meals on Wheels.

Meals On Wheels

Definition: Meals on Wheels is a program that delivers free or low cost meals to home bound seniors, the sick and disabled individuals who lack access to a healthy food source or who are unable to purchase or prepare their own meals.

Purpose: The goal of this program is to sustain the health of a patient by providing access to proper nutrition. The meals are delivered by paid drivers or volunteers, who also serve as a safety check and a source of companionship for the patient.

Impact: The Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) Foundation commissioned a research study in 2007 and found that over 5 million seniors (11.4%) in the US experience some form of food insecurity. Of these, about 2.5 million are at risk of hunger, and about 750,000 suffer from hunger due to financial constraints. A review study on the impact of the Meals on Wheels program found that home-delivered meals significantly improve diet quality, increase nutrient intake, and reduce food insecurity and nutritional risk among participants. In addition, increased socialization opportunity, dietary adherence, and quality of life were improved as well.

Availability: Service is provided by thousands of volunteer groups and non-profits across the nation. Many local Salvation Army centers, Catholic Charities, community action agencies, churches, Agency on Aging centers, and other charity type organizations administer the Meals on Wheels program in communities around the country. Meals on Wheels program provide hot, fresh, nourishing, and frozen meals.
