Diabetes
Definition: Diabetes is a disease in which your blood sugar (glucose) levels are too high. Blood sugar is one of the main resources of energy for cells and comes from the food you eat. Insulin is hormone produced by pancreatic cells and it regulates absorption of sugar from the blood into cells. Without enough insulin blood sugar stays in your blood and causes prediabetes or type 1 or 2 diabetes.
· Prediabetes - blood sugar is higher than normal but not high enough to be called diabetes. Having prediabetes puts you at a higher risk of getting type 2 diabetes
· Type 1 diabetes - the body does not make insulin
· Type 2 diabetes - the body does not make or use insulin well, and it is the most common type
Overall health impact: Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause serious problems. It can damage your eyes, kidneys, and nerves. Diabetes can also cause heart disease, stroke and even the need to remove a limb. Pregnant women can also get diabetes, called gestational diabetes.
